IN CONVERSATION: Marcos Ramirez of Piglove
Four years by the river

In this Q&A, we catch up with Marcos, the passionate founder behind Piglove by the River—a vibrant riverside brewery bar that’s become a local favourite for its bold flavours, community vibe, and sustainable ethos. Marcos shares the journey behind Piglove, what makes the District a unique place to grow a business, and how beer, creativity, and climate-conscious values come together on the waterfront.

Tell us where your passion for brewing came from?
Our passion for brewing started, as many good things do, with a shared love for beer and creativity. What began as a homebrewing hobby quickly grew into a passion—experimenting with flavours, hops, and styles. We’re inspired by beers that tell stories and capture a moment or a place, so we set out to create beers with soul, character, and with a Latin American touch.

Why the name Piglove?
Piglove comes from the Venezuelan expression ‘Cochino amor’, which is used to describe a love for something that is so big, raw and passionate that it becomes filthy. For pigs it’s mud, for us it’s craft beer and brewing! There’s nothing we enjoy more than getting messy in the brewery, working on new ideas.

When did you set up Piglove by the River? How did it come about?
We opened Piglove by the River in 2021. After the challenges of lockdown, and with the support of CITU, we wanted to create a space where people could reconnect—outdoors, by the water, surrounded by good vibes and great beer. The Climate Innovation District felt like the perfect home: modern, forward-thinking, and full of life.

What began as a casual summer pop-up quickly grew into something much bigger. It’s now become a core part of what we do and a place that brings people together all year round.

How has it grown in recent years?
It’s been amazing to see how quickly the community embraced the space. From a couple of taps and benches, we’ve now built a vibrant beer garden and events hub. We host street food takeovers, live music, collaborations, and seasonal events—all with our own beers at the centre of it. Our team has grown, our beer range has expanded, and our connection with residents and neighbours is stronger than ever.

What’s your favourite thing about that spot in the Climate Innovation District?
The view. Hands down. There’s something pretty special about sipping a cold beer by the river, with the sun setting behind the trees and the city buzzing nearby. The mix of nature and urban energy is unique. Plus, the people in this area are amazing—curious, creative, and always up for something new.

A blend of soul, and funk it is always great at the river.

Best thing about CID?
The community. It’s full of people building something different, thinking sustainably, and creating a future-facing neighbourhood. We’re proud to be part of it.
